Season one · Chapter 05

Blood in the Braids

Power is not given. It is braided — strand by strand, ancestor by ancestor.

Synopsis

The series' central metaphor becomes flesh. Cotto learns that her braids are not decoration. They are a living record of the women who stood before her — Afua first among them — and a circuit for the power they refused to surrender. Shocking revelations force her to decide who in her circle is trustworthy. Bloodline is not the same thing as loyalty. Being who you are makes you powerful. Denying it unmakes the gift.
